Tips For Storing Musical Equipment in a Self Storage Unit

10 Tips on Storing Musical Equipment & Records
Let's face it; technology is changing the way we listen to music. The classic sound of vinyl records has now evolved into the crisp digital recordings of CDs and MP3s. After upgrading your collection of music to a new form of media, why not store your old records in a self storage unit, so that one day you may relive the classics in the way that they were meant to be heard; spinning on the old 45. Likewise, why not store those musical instruments that you purchased, but either never quite learned how to play, or just don't have enough room for, in a secure location where you can one day retrieve them and reminisce on old times. To help you out, here are a few tips on how to store your most cherished musical accessories:
1) Records: Before storing any record make sure you dust each record with a soft cloth to prevent any future scratching.
2) Records: If possible, store each record in its original jacket. If you do not have the original jacket, store the record between two pieces of cardboard.
3) Records: Box records in alphabetical order by artist to make them easy to find in the future, and then seal the box by taping all possible air entryways where dust may enter.
4) Record Players: First, remove the needle from the record player and put it in a cotton ball, then a zip lock bag for protection.
5) Record Players: Second detach the arm of the player so it does not break if the player shifts during storage
6) Record Players: Store arm, record player and bagged needle in the same box, again doing your best to secure openings from dust.
7) Acoustic Guitars: First dust guitar completely including neck and base. Fill the hole in the base of the guitar with a soft cloth or tissue paper to prevent dust or insects from collecting inside. Finally, store guitar in a hard case or wrap in a thick blanket to prevent damage to the guitar during storage.
Electric Guitars: Again, dust guitar completely. Store guitar in a hard case or thick blanket to protect it during transport and storage. For both acoustic and electric guitars, the strings should be loosened before storage. Tape off the output jack for the amp to prevent dust from entering.
9) Piano: To store a piano, grand, keyboard, or otherwise, they must first be dusted both inside where the strings are kept, and along the exterior to keep from damage. A final tip for pianos is to wrap their exterior tightly in soft blankets, sheets, or tarps which will prevent them from becoming scratched or collecting dust during storage.
10) For all string instruments, store them in modest dry temperatures, as excessive heat or humidity will cause these instruments to fall out of tune. Extra caution should be taken in areas of high heat or humidity, such as in a self storage San Diego located facility. This may not be a problem for most guitars, since tuning for these instruments is easy; however pianos mostly need to be professionally tuned since their tuning process tends to be more technically involved. Drum sets are especially vulnerable to humidity related damage in these types of climates and should be stored with some type of dehumidifier or dehumidifying agent such as silica gel.
